Multi-Rail RM System modules

The basic components of the Multi-Rail system are a base rail (RM-), clamping modules (RMC-) and stopper modules (RMS-).
To locate and position the workpiece side guides (RMG-) and parallels/riser blocks (RMP-) are used.

Multi-Rail RM clamp modules (RMC-)

All the jaw types, such as serrated (R), smooth (S), diamond-coated (D), additional piece models (T), grip models (G), self-aligning (B), machinable (M), etc., are suitable for the Multi-Rail RM system.

D-size (12 mm or 1/2" bolt) and B-size (M8 or 5/16" bolt) clamps are most commonly used in the Multi-Rail RM system.

In the RMC-ab code format a=size and b=jaw type.

This clamp module features a D-series clamp with two smooth jaws (S).

In the clamp modules RMC-DSx, one jaw is smooth and another jaw is of another type.  For example, in RMC-DSR one jaw is serrated.

RMC-DTx

The clamp module RMC-TTx features a D-series clamp with two jaws for an additional piece (T). 

In the clamp modules RMC-DTx, one jaw is for additional piece jaw and another one is of another type. For example, in the RMC-DTS one jaw is smooth.

OK-VISE’s novel DOTFORCE concept is a part of the Multi-Rail RM system and is based on a simple visual red dot in the clamp module. The red dot disappears when the clamping force is high enough.
The parts of the module are

  • DK2-VTI wedge
  • DOTFORCE bolt
  • UDP-RM1 Plate
  • T-nut
  • Smooth jaws*

Please note that the jaws can be easily changed to any other combination.

T-slot sets for clamps

Some clamp types for the RM system already have a code, for example, RMC-DR or RMC-DS. Code is defined as a set of letters and numbers given to a product, where the letters and numbers are abbreviated attributes that distinguish one product from another as size, product type, jaw type, etc. If you cannot find a suitable product code from our price list, please create your own code.

 All B- and D-series clamps and combinations are suitable for the Multi-Rail RM system.

Below are some examples of how to read the code: 
Adapter RMA-D1 includes a T-slot nut and bolt for D-size clamps.
Adapter RMA-BP1 includes a T-slot nut, bolt and riser plate to lift up the clamp (B-size).

Please note that using B-series clamps on Multi-Rail without a plate is not recommended.

This plate is used with D-series clamps to prevent the clamp rotating on the rail.

Base rail RM common properties

Compared to similar systems on the market, the OK-VISE Multi-Rail base is the most stable due to its steep serration profile. It has been designed for D- and B-series clamp modules and can withstand up to 4 tonnes clamping force. The pitch of the serration is 2,5 mm, and the size of the RM profile is 44 x 50 mm.
The accuracy from every serration to the positioning hole is ± 0.01 mm.

RMS-S, RMS-Sn

The most common stopper is RMS-S, which has two smooth and nitrided jaws. It is optimal for the second setup, when OK-VISE clamps are used with full force. Friction level is adequate even for roughing and other types of machining where high forces occur.

The accuracy from every serrration to the jaw surface is ± 0.01 mm.

RMS-S2 is more narrow than RMS-S, about the size of a B-series clamp.

RMS-S3 is higher than RMS-S.

RMS-G4S is a grip model, one jaw possessing a knife-edge grip pattern while the other jaw is smooth. The jaws are nitrided.

This stopper type has two round, serrated contact areas which hold both big and small workpieces firmly in the correct position.

Stoppers that have -ab at the end of the product code are in most cases combinations of two different jaws.

For example, in the RMS-SR model, one jaw is serrated (R) and another one is smooth (S).

RMS-M, RMS-Mx

RMS MSThese are machinable stopper models which are especially suitable for machining of complex workpieces, or when extreme accuracy is needed and product-specific jaws are used for machining.

RMS-M has two extended jaws that are machinable. Furthermore, all combinations can be machined because these models are made of the relatively soft material (HRC 30, not hardened or nitrided). In the RMS-MS model, one jaw is of  the "normal" length, and normally it is smooth. For machining purposes this model is slightly bigger in size.

These stopper modules have at least one jaw which is diamond coated (D). In the RMS-D model both jaws have a diamond coating, while RMS-DS has one jaw that is smooth.

RMS-G, RMS-Gx

RMS GSRMS-G is a grip model with two HSS pins that penetrate into the workpiece, leaving tiny marks on it. The friction is much higher than that of using the standard serrated jaw, against soft steel the friction co-efficient factor is up to 0,8.

Model RMS-GS has one grip jaw and one smooth jaw.

RMS-T, RMS-Tx

In this stopper module the same additional pieces can be used as in D-series low-profile clamps. In this stopper module the same additional pieces can be used as in D-series low-profile clamps.

RMS-T has two additional pieces jaws. RMS-TS has one smooth jaw (photo) and one additional piece jaw. In the RMS-TR module one jaw is serrated and another one is an additional piece jaw.

RMS HS

This model has a horizontal V-shape jaw to hold small round-shaped workpieces or bars. 

RMS-H has two such jaws. In the RMS-HS module one jaw is smooth and another one - V-shape.

rms vs f1This model has a vertical V-shape jaw to hold round-shaped workpieces of various sizes.

The optimal workpiece sizes are given in the Dimension drawings (see Dim. in the table above). Please note that when machining a workpiece with a diameter larger than maximum given in the Dimensions drawings, there is a line contact between the jaw and the workpiece, and the jaw is likely to leave marks on the workpiece surface.

RMS-V has two such jaws, RMS-VS has one smooth jaw (photo).

Multi-Rail RM parallels (RMP-) and riser blocks

Like side guides, Multi-Rail RM parallels are used to assist in positioning workpiece on the Multi-Rail. Multi-Rail RM parallels are placed on the rail, thus protecting the rail's serration.

Magnet parallel RMP-MG1

A parallel plate 5x15 mm in size with a width of 44 mm.
On one side there are two magnets, so this parallel plate can be easily fastened on a stopper (height 15 mm) or on a fixturing base such as Multi-Rail (height is then 5 mm).

This version is ground to accuracy +- 0.01 mm

RMP-1 is the most common parallel model.

Multi-Rail RM side guides (RMG-)

Side guides are designed to assist in positioning the workpiece on the Multi-Rail. The workpiece is pressed sideways (as regards the clamping force) against the guide, either manually or using a spring guide.

Machining options

The Multi-Rail dimensions can be also modified. OK.VISE has predefined set of ready machining options, which are available on request. Usually, ordering of the special machining option slightly increases delivery time.

The set AD-RM-n includes n pieces of bolts, where 2 bolts are type OKSB12-45 and the remaining ones (n-2 pieces) are of type DIN912M12X45.

Fastening clamps

This is an option which is typically used to fasten components to a base (typically a T-slot table) in cases where the component cannot be bolted directly.

Threads and positioning holes on the platforms

When a Multi-Rail system is installed on the grid or blank platform, most typical way of installation is to use two shoulder bolts for positioning and DIN912 bolts for remaining holes.

Shoulder bolt requires a precise 12 mm hole. Additionally, bushings and/or threaded inserts can be used.
For the standard bolts simple M12 thread is needed. In aluminium platforms, threaded inserts are recommended.

Inserts and platforms are available through the OK-VISE global distribution network.

DIGIFORCE OPTION TO  MULTI-RAIL RM SYSTEM

OK-VISE Oy has again taken a major step in fixturing technology

Particularly when clamping is automated, most typically by using robots to load work pieces into machining centers, verifying the proper clamping force has been a challenge.
In manual clamping systems torque measurement is often used. This is a straightforward and easy method, but the relation between the torque and the actual clamping force can be inaccurate.

With hydraulic clamping oil pressure is easy to measure. However, even here there are several other variables that influence the clamping force. To name just one example, when the hydraulic cylinder is at the bottom of the stroke the oil pressure goes up, but the work piece is not necessarily clamped at all!

The approach that OK-VISE has taken is to integrate clamping force measurement directly into the stopper of the Multi-Rail RM system. Multi-Rail is part of the OK-VISE Fixturing Concept, which includes several modular fixturing systems for various purposes.

This digital concept is designed to be an integral part of any system where verifying clamping force is essential.
